My Greatest Talent by Brian Rihlmann

long before
these purgatory days
I’ve kept my distance…

I’ve kept it in sandboxes
on the playground
in crowded hallways
and classrooms

I’ve kept it at bars
at parties
at concerts
and in mosh pits

I’ve kept it during family reunions
during therapy sessions
during group photos, group hugs
or cheek to cheek selfies

I’ve kept it in shared spaces
in motel rooms, apartments
in beds strange or familiar

I’ve kept it holding hands
and hearts
and while I was
deep inside you…
and I think you could tell—

you’re gone
and far away

you learned it
from me
