Time Untended: A Villanelle by Sterling Warner

Time untended triggers loss through neglect
Past opportunities won’t come again;
Escape, escape, any guilt or regret.

Investors look ahead, wealth they expect,
Ignoring yesterday’s plummeting gain,
Time untended triggers loss through neglect

Lovers trapped by choice they’d like to defect
live unhappy never breaking love’s chain,
Escape, escape, any guilt or regret

Prophets blinded by visions they dissect
Overlook veiled marvels in the mundane,
Time untended triggers loss through neglect.

Poets seize the moment with due respect
Appeal to couples both in love and pain,
Escape, escape, any guilt or regret.

Delayed good-byes wait on words to select
In death like an albatross will remain;
Time untended triggers loss through neglect
Escape, escape, any guilt or regret.
