Listen to the Wind by Sy Roth
Listen to the wind kiss the grass.
It makes little moaning noises
Rolling in its breezes.
Listen to the kettledrum chorus of prayer
In the background between the trees.
Listen to the laughter as they dispatch them
In the little soft grasses offering no resistance.
They bend to the wind filling the crevices of the earth.
They water the ground with their blood.
Listen to the wind
Its soothing draughts of liquid gold.
The grasses stretch to the sun and spill their seed
In almost silent benediction
While the others, somewhere, beyond the trees
Make their silence heard behind the yammering guns.
Awash in their power
Seeing only vermin.
Once they had lives and existence
And no one prayed for forgiveness.
Listen to the voices of forgiveness
In the grass nourished by their atoms.
They nattering others go on with their existence
These two lovers enmeshed in a soft sun and soft breezes
One giving life
While the others
Think of nothing but death.
