Today someone called me dull by Judekelvin Igbonekwu
Today someone called me dull
– the girl child
I hear my dad have an argument, a heated argument,
I can tell from his mild lurking voice like a woman
that this argument was meant to heat up an argument
even so, I have never seen him in this enjoy-ous tone of voice
What is the gender of your child?
Yes, now you have spoken, a son!
of course, you have given birth, as he argued
a son is everything
Today someone called me dull,
and I cannot but wonder why my dad says a son is everything
if a son is everything, he must be above the cloud of thoughts,
he must be 100 per cent effective,
a son must be the robotic man
such we have seen our twenty-first-century builders build,
a son cannot be dull, but
dull was the word he used.
As I lingered over my fading thought,
a dilemma of a sagging heart,
maybe I was not a boy child after-all,
a son cannot be dull.
Dull was the word he used, dull was the word that pierced my thorax.
I am a male and a female child
and a male and female child are two sides of the same coin,
and father this is the sides of the coin.
A man and a woman brings a son and daughter, and
a son is female as the daughter is male,
the biblical word says
a girl child was born out from his spine.
Think of it, maybe it was not the woman that was drawn out,
maybe it was the man,
it is just a written text in our biblical record,
and now we feel exonerated
Maybe we are the same sides of a coin
and today I think again of my dad’s argument and I can say,
a female child is also everything,
a female child is not dull,
she is Obinna, her father’s heart
