Alexander’s Gas Bar by Andrew Scott

Every morning for the past forty three years
I have strolled out to this station at six in the morning
whether it is rain, snow or shine
it does not matter, I am always here
to meet the same and different people each day
today the air is a cool crisp
small cloud periodically covering the sun

I start so early to get the pumps ready
never knowing if it is a slow or fast day
either way is fine by me
like to get that balance though
where you are busy but can still talk
as I will be the only one here like most days
the wife will bring me down lunch
she does not stay long, never has.

Cars do not really start going by until eight
most on that direct, panic route to work
tunnel vision is all they have
so surprised half of them even make it
when one of them pulls in I am ready
brewed coffee and personal smile

We are not one of the big stations
that hardly remember your face
as you fill up at their line of pumps
there is only two pumps here for gas
and that will never change
I will always remember the faces
whether stranger, friend or foe
that is what I want
being in a complete hurry does not make sense.

So much change all around
what was once a dirt road is now paved
new houses and stations all around
I have kept this place the same
thought of new signs and paint
but that would take something away from it all
like a piece of character that cannot be replaced
I do not want that here at all
maybe a bit old fashioned in thinking
but when someone visits here
they take something with them
and leave a little here
at Alexander’s Gas Bar
