Deliver Us From What We’ve Become by Gary Glauber
Truth becomes a churlish notion
in hands of unholy crew,
setting course for deeper ocean
beyond straits of misconstrue.
Never stop to ask directions,
always earn a tidy sum.
Bless the workers’ genuflections
under watchful leader’s thumb.
Pay to grab inside advantage
as prelude to righteous rage,
don’t get caught applying bandage
(wounds are tendered to off-stage).
Here the story’s never ending,
there the money lands offshore,
follow where the bank is lending,
under every stone explore.
Bully for this extradition,
kudos to the watchful eye.
Lying is the new tradition:
never give the reason why.
Act as if it’s all expected,
so much for this sleight of hand,
what they hope went undetected
turns up with a new demand.
Headlines turn outrageous folly
into depths of soulless ice,
Deaf ears never seemed so jolly
when evading sound advice.
Fiction seen as real creation,
pulling wool over the eyes,
accolade as accusation,
rich reward of peaceful prize.
When shall sound the judge’s gavel?
When shall justice rear its head?
Every day new threads unravel,
greater runs the flow of dread.
Watch, we watch and wait and wonder,
bracing for the iceberg’s cross,
hoping that this spell we’re under
breaks before the mounting loss.
We the people want solutions
reckoning approaching soon,
fast before our institutions
fall apart in wrack and ruin.
