Every Night by Ryan Quinn Flanagan

Every Night

I was at that book bindery
in Scarborough
giving away my best years
for 8.50/hr

and I was the smart one

packed a lunch
as though I knew I would
be there a while

clocking in at midnight
and working until 8
in the morning

then stumbling back home
past the Knights of Columbus place
where they always stacked
the chairs just

like some crazed nocturnal thing
with lazy bloodshot eyes
from watching the machine
all night and trying to
keep up

until the constant mindless drudgery
of it all
put me in a trance

from which I’m still trying
to recover.
