short psalm
The wood, not the statue.
The wind, not the prayer.
The sprawl of the locus.
The all, not the where.

spring

Trees speaking in tongues of flame
the white and yellow words for spring
form a pure and antique name
which none can sing.

moonwash

Wind washes light from the moon.
then overflows the dawn.
The flood becomes today.
The moon is washed away.

skinning

There’s more than one way to skin a gnat,
but detail, detail, detail —
a star at a time you build a sky
and it all comes down to that.

men

We really don’t want to be
that asshole from the bar
some twenty years ago,
but that is what we are.

god whistling

god and truth
the shape of light
bent by matter
and matterless

beyond all measure
inside out
the voiceless name
the nameless voice

topic

poetry
is about life
outside of
poetry

question

Once you’re dead
you don’t get
to find out
how long or short
a time it was.

the other man’s glass

Where is the life I didn’t lead?
Is he there somewhere wondering
about me? Does his glass seem
spilled or his lips wet and shiny?
And what if we’re both right?

the burned down hut

Wisps of smoke
fade in the air
before they can reach
the cherry blossom tree.

presence

hill
half in shadow
half in light

the hill
behind me
rises

a lover’s anger

When you turn away
and your eyes refuse
to even spit on me,
don’t you know
you are burning the hut of my soul?

the blade

The blade of her earring
cut a slice from the light
as she turned away
and I bled.

hurry

Bright leaves blown across the lawn.
Dead gray kitten on the deck.
No time left to write, to watch.

thirst

The world’s unquenchable beauty
(and yes, we can be sated, and no,
it can’t and won’t) — you must watch
for me as I once watched for who
and whatever went before me.
