A Taste of Fear by Josh Gaines

A Taste of Fear by Josh Gaines

A Taste of Fear

Driving between Houston
and San Marcos, Texas
I drank the last best
cup of coffee,
and wished the pace
of our nation
would change,
believed most anything
different to be better.

After second impact,
stopping for another human
voice besides the radio,
I told large men in plaid
and overalls,
and boots
at a nowhere diner
who had no idea
what was going on,
to turn on the news.

In retrospect,
I wish I hadn’t wished so hard.
I wish I had let those people
finish their last meal in peace
before the reality of living
through the nation’s longest war
changed the way
everything tastes.
