The Deep

The Deep

The night grabs me and rolls me in the dark –
Ocean waves,
And in my soul leaves an eternal mark –
Spirit saves,
The sea sings in my salty blood so strong,
And ties me thus to evolution’s song,
Primal mother,
No-one other,
With us all for aeons long.

I hear my pulse within a seashell’s curl –
Comes and goes,
Entrapped within a nautilus’ whirl –
The highs and lows,
I hear my heart beat out its steady thrum,
My lifeblood’s depths the shell does plumb,
Connected so,
A tidal tow,
Of many parts we are the sum.

And in the night I also am with you –
Entwined to last,
This unabating, roiling tide of two –
Holding fast,
The swell of you, and on your skin sweet brine,
The pulse of you, matching well with mine,
You and Me,
Depth of We,
This is the eternal sign.
