Position of a Soldier

Boy-made-man stands on a mound,
looks around him,
bodies of friends just bodies.

As the enemy retreats,
he lifts a pole with flag at its end,
holds it up for the sky to see,
then stays his position
even when dusk has fallen
on the ghosts of his brothers,
who whisper, “Sleep now.
Your job is done.”

But he never does,
because sleep means
something different now,
something that can’t be undone.
