Leave This House

by John Garmon

Go check into a hotel
Find some meaningful solitary activity to ease your pain
Feed the squirrels and pigeons if you must
Sit all day in an invisible force field
Make your voice sound with articulate words
Pay cash in advance for your room at the hotel
These are times of self-conscious silence in little cafes
People sit around drinking coffee and looking at laptops
No one has much to say to anyone else
Not anymore since speaking gets us nowhere
We are all strangers among the agoraphobic
No clear marking of the border between here and there
Young and inconsolable we wish we could speak
We wish we had enough money for a bear claw
They are so tasty with a tall cup of Joe
