Lisa Brandel
Artist: Lisa Brandel
Not by standard measures, but by expression. Relatively new to the world of art Lisa has taken a very visual literary talent and applied it to canvas. Her style is a comfortable cross between neo impressionism, abstraction, and expressionism. The lines are course, the colors vivid, and the mood is multi-layered.
In a series depicting a moment/story of several kinds of cancer Lisa captures and conveys emotion that requires the viewer to watch more than look. The art cannot be appreciated at face value in any light; it has to be taken in. The experience is compelling, telling, and will always give you pause for thought. The stories that Lisa’s art tell cut to the core of mortality in a way that gives us all room to find a place in the painting. Patient, caregiver, friend or family; there is a place for each of us to fit in and become part of it.
There is color, texture, depth and emotion in everything Lisa paints. Using techniques of black light paint in combination with acrylics, the art achieves a kind of fourth dimension both visually and on a spiritual level. Like classic literature you can visit the art time and time again, finding something new with each experience, and you will find a place within the art, and it will find a place within you.
Abstract~
Black Light Off~ Acrylic on Canvas. Melanin cells as they appear under microscope with UV light. Can be seen in normal light, or brought to life in black light. 14”x11” [img src=http://blognostics.net/wp-content/flagallery/abstract/thumbs/thumbs_in-the-sun_on.jpg]In the Sun~

The brilliant and hot colors of this painting show the turbulence and pain of an all too common disease and capture the turmoil of both the soul and the affliction in a poignant black lit display. 24"x48" Acrylic on Canvas. One - One is either the universe or a single cell. It is symbolic of the universe inside of a cell. It is the shape of all things connecting, and inter-connecting. People see in it what they want to see, and sometimes things they never dreamed of. One is Lisa’s personal symbol for unity large and small. 24”x14” Acrylic Black Light on Gypsum board
Mental Health~
Leaving Eden envelopes the addict’s journey into a new normal. The path leading from Eden is laced with hopes and ideas dead from possibility much less the skeletons left behind in a past that cannot be erased. The canopy of lifeless trees with their tributary branches expose the ever narrowing, darkened path the addict runs along into the unknown. 36”x60” Acrylic on Canvas [unframed][img src=http://blognostics.net/wp-content/flagallery/mental-health/thumbs/thumbs_sea-of-troubles_off.jpg]Sea of Troubles - Depression~
Black Light Off~ The metaphor of the painting becomes personal for the traveler into the painting. Anyone who has dealt with depression might have felt like the subject. The moon/brain in the painting is both light and dark, and casts the light and trouble onto the sea. The person in the painting is drowning, or coming to the surface, depending on the mood of the viewer. Done in black light and regular paint, this is two paintings or views in one and the metaphor up to the audience. 48”x36” Acrylic on Canvas [unframed] [img src=http://blognostics.net/wp-content/flagallery/mental-health/thumbs/thumbs_sea-of-troubles_on.jpg]Sea of Troubles - Depression~

The Angels~
The Angel is seen watching over, pointing the way, and absorbing the darkness of the coming storm so that light might illuminate the path. This is symbolic of the guidance we take, and the good advice we ignore along life’s path. Where ever we are on the journey we are only one hope away from the light. 20"x30" Acrylic on canvas with black light treatments[img src=http://blognostics.net/wp-content/flagallery/the-angels/thumbs/thumbs_for_war.jpg]For War~
In traditional mythology and spiritual thought the concept of the guardian angel is a gentle protector. However, if we think on what it means to be a guardian to another, to be willing to cast yourself in harm’s way selflessly, we might begin to see these guardian angels as warriors. This warrior angel stares in the face of fear, and threat, but does not blink. She is battered by the tumult of life and does not back down, she stands forever between you and all harm. If we are blessed, we know people like her, and if we have courage we are people like this. 30"x20" Acrylic on canvas daylight only.[img src=http://blognostics.net/wp-content/flagallery/the-angels/thumbs/thumbs_for_wisdom.jpg]For Wisdom~
She looks to the light, and in looking it becomes her. Guided to the path of wisdom this angel holds the torch for us all. This painting is a blend of 19th century folk art styling with contemporary uses of color and elements. 20"x30" Acrylic on canvas
Transitional~
Black Light On~ An experiment in technique became a discovery of the majestic facade of the owl. "Barney" as named by the mother of the artist, is a close up of the piercing gaze of the bird. In black light it takes on moonlight, and we get to gaze into the eyes few will ever see. 24"x18" Acrylic on canvas daylight and black light treatments.[img src=http://blognostics.net/wp-content/flagallery/transitional/thumbs/thumbs_barney_daylight.jpg]Barney~

Inspired by a trip to the Columbus Zoo, Lisa decided to capture a moment with the lorikeet her mother was feeding. In her eyes the bird became a moment of peace for all. She captured the bird in metallic and bright color. 10"x10" Acrylic on canvas
The Human Condition~
From a non-descript beginning, Lymphoma spreads like seeds from a dandelion. 16”x10” Acrylic Black light on Canvas[img src=http://blognostics.net/wp-content/flagallery/the-human-condition/thumbs/thumbs_in-the_mind_off.jpg]All in the Mind - Brain Cancer~
Black Light Off~ captured in subtle impressionistic style, Lisa illustrates an elder deep in thought and prayer while in the black light setting, the disease courses her body. 20"x30" Acrylic on Canvas with black light treatments [img src=http://blognostics.net/wp-content/flagallery/the-human-condition/thumbs/thumbs_in_the_mind_on.jpg]All in the Mind - Brain Cancer~

Black Light Off~ The disease occupies the negative space between the canvases and punctuates the balance between masculinity and mortality for the patient. In black light we see the chemotherapy coursing through the body and the rulers become a connection. Notice the change from the faceless figure to the look of anguished expression as the flames die in black light. 2, 24"x24" canvases attached with 9 wooden rulers.
