Oh to Be That Happy Captive by Colin Dodds

Oh to be that happy captive
in the custody of angels
above the tyranny of fingers
and the banners of the upturned mouth

Destiny vanished, destination banished
oblivion twinkling among the lightly cherished jewelry
of each our passing moments

Oh to be that happy captive
in the custody of angels
free of the interfering eyes of whispers

In such godblessed oceanseasons
Winter oysters in the spring
and tumbling hooves of tidestones
buffering the never-finished sifting
of the shifting wind

And sighing oblivion’s no oblivion
just a gentlemen’s agreement
to leave a matter overgrown alone awhile

Oh to be that happy captive
in the custody of angels
and gathered to a place
summarized as light

Oh to be that happy captive
in the custody of angels
trundled to a place described, if at all,
by a gentlemen’s agreement
